Building the Connection for Our Future

As the leading technology provider in Alaska, we know our work is constantly evolving – and never done. We've been committed to serving the communities we live in for 70 years and are always strengthening our network to deliver new solutions and empower our members to live more connected lives today, and for generations to come.

Recent Network Upgrades and Expansion

Between 2019-2021 alone, we have upgraded speeds to about 17,000 locations and brought fiber-to-home capability to more than 2,500 lots.

The completed fiber transport projects focused on developing fiber-to-the-home access for member-owners in areas like Wasilla, Palmer, Chugiak, Eagle River, and the Big Lake to Healy areas.

And we are not stopping there. We will continue to future-proof our network with fiber.

Building the Fiber Frontier

As we continue to improve connections in remote areas through the Alaska Plan, our fiber-to-the-home project will upgrade existing copper connections to fiber to best meet the community’s growing technology needs.

We are proud to be upgrading our network with fiber in the following phases:

  • 2023: South Hiland area of Eagle River, Healy, Rogers Road in Big Lake, Beverly Lakes, Marble/Hayfield Road, Sylvia Shores and Gun Flint Trail
  • 2023: Big Lake, Houston, Willow & Talkeetna: Johnsons Road, Waldal Drive, Hawk Lane, Birch Harbor Road, Sunshine Lakes, Question Lake, Timber Park
  • 2024: Talkeetna Spur, Montana Creek, Buffalo Mine, Bodenburg Loop, McCombs Road, Back Acres, Point Mackenzie
  • This schedule is subject to change due to contractor and weather factors.

    Unmatched Reliability

In 2020, MTA  completed construction and officially commissioned AlCan ONE (Alaska Canada Overland Network), the first and only all-terrestrial fiber network connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States and beyond.

Not only does AlCan ONE provide lightning-fast connection speeds for our members, but it also acts as a failsafe for data and telecom services all over the state. Now, even if an eruption, earthquake, or other natural disaster damages undersea cables, our terrestrial network can help ensure that Alaskans stay connected to assistance, services, customers, and loved ones.

    Closing the Digital Divide

For MTA, working to close the digital divide is not just a new trend or goal for this year – we’ve been focused on it for decades.

We were pleased to receive a $1.9 million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of its ReConnect Program, which focuses on building broadband infrastructure in rural America.

In addition, we expect the recently passed bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to allow us to continue our efforts as it prioritizes funding to community-built networks and co-ops like ours, rather than offering incentives to large, private companies – giving back to communities and their businesses along with the individuals using broadband in them.

We also participate in discount programs like our MSBSD Broadband Program in partnership with the Mat-Su Health Foundation and the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and are proud to offer high-quality internet plans at a low cost to eligible members.
