Software Compatibility For MTA Protects

What kind of computer can I use MTA Protects on?
MTA Protects will operate on Windows-based PCs with the exception of Windows 95. MTA Protects is not designed for use on other operating systems, such as older versions of Windows, or the Macintosh® Operating System - so MTA Protects can't be used with an Apple Mac computer, for example.

Supported Operating System Platforms: Windows 2000, patched to service pack 3 as minimum, recommended SP4, Windows XP (Professional/Home), patched to service pack 1, recommended SP2, Windows 98, Windows Vista.

What brands of Instant Messenger software does MTA Protects report and record?
Currently, MTA Protects monitors and records MSN®, Yahoo®, AOL®, ICQ® and Google Talk® messenger software.

How will I know that all the components of MTA Protects are actively working?
When you log into the Control Centre, the first screen that you see shows you summary graphs for the six main components of MTA Protects: website visits, messenger/chat usage, blocked sites, anti virus, computer usage and software usage. There is a set of graphs for each of your machines running Netintelligence. You can see the different sets of graphs by clicking on the computer name tab at the top of the screen. The presence of the graphs, for each of your machines running Netintelligence, shows that MTA Protects is functioning fully.

In addition, MTA Protects runs a small process (a 'background' activity) which checks on the status of your MTA Protects software every minute. If this process detects that MTA Protects has suffered a malfunction for any reason, it will automatically restart the software.

How do I add MTA Protects to another computer?
You can install MTA Protects on three separate machines which you own, either at home, in the office or a mobile machine such as a laptop. (If you were to try to install on a fourth machine, the client on this machine would simply be ignored by the MTA Protects central databases.)

Can anyone other than me remove or disable the MTA Protects from my computer(s)?
Only users with 'Administrator' privileges for a machine can remove software. This is why we recommend that other users of your PC should be given the 'Limited' type of user account, while you yourself should have an 'Administrator' account.

It is possible for a more advanced user to stop the MTA Protects process manually, but the effect of doing this is only temporary, as MTA Protects will automatically restart itself in minutes if this should happen.

Only users with a Control Centre login (i.e. yourself) can make MTA Protects 'inactive' (or disabled) for any users of a machine.

How quickly are any changes that I make to my MTA Protects enabled?
Your MTA Protects software 'communicates' with our central databases on a regular interval. So any configuration changes that you make (e.g. adding a new computer, setting blocking rules for a particular user) will start to be effective after the machine communicates with the central services.

Changes that we make to our central databases (e.g. adding more categorized websites) are made continuously, and are effective as soon as they are made - if you have blocked the category of website which any new addresses belong to, then you will be immediately protected.

How will I receive any future upgrades to the MTA Protects software?
The upgrades will be sent to your machine(s) automatically, as and when new releases are available.

How far back can I see the MTA Protects reports for a particular user?
The Central Database holds the last 30 days' data, on a rolling basis. This means that no permanent record is kept centrally. You can of course either save or print the MTA Protects reports, to keep a lasting record of your own.

In the report screens, you can select to see the data for a particular user (or for all users) on any given day, or for the last 7 days. You can also use the calendar 'date picker' (where available on detail screens) to look at data for the previous 30 days.

How do I uninstall MTA Protects?
You can uninstall the MTA Protects software in the usual way, using the standard Windows Control Panel feature 'Add or Remove Programs'.

Note that uninstalling the MTA Protects software from your computer doesn't remove the computer's tab and data from the Control Centre. You can remove a machine's data from the Control Centre by visiting the 'My Homepage' screen and clicking on 'Remove computer from Control Centre'.

Note: As soon as the user selects to remove a machine from the Control Centre, it disappears from the Control Centre straight away, however it will take 15 minutes for the machine data to be deleted from the MTA Protects databases. As a result if they have already used their 3 licenses and then removed a machine from the control centre, they will have to wait at least 15 minutes before that license is freed up before they can reuse this on another machine.

Web Site Access Configuration for MTA Protects

What subjects are contained within the categories that MTA Protects blocks?
MTA Protects has sophisticated filtering categories, which have been simplified to the following:

Adult - Pornographic sites; sites featuring nudity and/or sexuality; ‘adult’ underwear and role-playing apparel; games, humor and literature sites with overtly adult content; personals/dating/romance; art featuring nudity or explicit sexuality; sex education.
Drugs - Sites concerned with supply, promotion and/or advocacy of illegal drugs; including drug-related paraphernalia, literature, and equipment; associated alternative lifestyles.
Gambling - Bookmakers and casinos (online and offline); gambling machines (fruit machines, roulette, etc.); gambling resource and information sites.
Gaming - Online games; online gaming groups; gaming resources; interactive puzzles; role-playing games; video games; coin-operated games.
Hate - Violence; aggression; racism; weapons (supply and advocacy/information); terrorism; political, racial or religious intolerance, bigotry or hate; incitement to law-breaking, including civil disobedience; suicide assistance/advocacy sites.
Threats - Sites concerning hacking, phreaking, phishing, virus creation, password cracking, illegal software, warez, proxies and redirectors, fraud, credit card number generation, dialers, and other identifiable threats

MTA Protects uses a unique combination of detection tools and techniques that can identify harmful websites. The MTA Protects central databases contain in excess of 30 million digital fingerprints, which identify a file out of millions of other files.

These fingerprints are generated from an assessment process, which involves our dedicated team of specialists physically reviewing the material and determining the categories to which the material should be assigned. The material can take various forms: images, website addresses (URLs), files, movies etc.

MTA Protects constantly compares web access requests against the MTA Protects databases for matches. If a member of your household is attempting to reach a web resource which has been found and classified within the MTA Protects database, and which you have decided they shouldn't see, they will be denied access.

I want my children to visit only certain websites, and to be prevented from visiting all other websites. What do I do?
MTA Protects has a feature specifically designed for this very purpose: 'Safe Internet'. This user will only be able to visit the sites that you have included in his or her personal list.

I need to do some research and wish to have unrestricted access to the interent. What do I need to do?
When you do not want any of the filtering rules to apply to you, simply set your user to Managed Settings under ‘Edit Users’ then in ‘Managed Settings’ do not select any of the MTA Protects categories.

I want to apply a category to 'Managed Internet' so that I am generally protected, but I want to make some exceptions (websites in this category which I will be able to access). What can I do?
To unblock a site in one of our categories (at least for your own personal use), you can add the website address to your 'Managed Internet' personal 'allow' list - having this list means that even though blocking is still 'on' for the category in general, you will be able to visit these particular sites.

What kind of protection does MTA Protects offer?
As filtering products such as MTA Protects become more widely used, the purveyors of harmful content are constantly seeking ways to ensure that their websites are visited, and not blocked. (For example, many children will want to visit the website Britney.com to get the latest news on their favorite pop star, but if they miss-spell or mistype the name as Brittny.com they will be directed to an adult material site.) At MTA Protects we recognize this issue - which is why the content is physically viewed on the websites and why we capture digital fingerprints of inappropriate images and files in our assessment process.

Anti Virus Configuration for MTA Protects

Is there anything I should do before installing the Anti-Virus part of MTA Protects?
To use MTA Protects Anti-Virus, you must uninstall any other anti-virus software you're currently using. You don't have to stop using your current software right away - you can download and install MTA Protects Anti-Virus at any time, so you might choose to keep using your existing anti-virus protection for the length of its license.

To remove existing anti-virus software from your computer, please refer to the manufacturer's instructions. Many of these programs can be uninstalled using the standard Microsoft® Windows® 'Add or Remove Programs' feature in the Windows Control Panel.

What do I need to do to use MTA Protects Anti-Virus?
You must have MTA Protects already installed on any computer you want to install the anti-virus software component onto. MTA Protects Anti-Virus, with its preconfigured settings that have been recommended by Kaspersky Labs® experts, means once installed you don't have to do anything at all in order to have your computer fully protected.

If you want to change any of the anti-virus settings or to learn more about MTA Protects Anti-Virus, you can use the MTA Protects Anti-Virus control panel.

Do I need a separate license for MTA Protects Anti-Virus?
No. The Anti-Virus component of MTA Protects does NOT have to be purchased separately - you can download MTA Protects Anti-Virus from your Control Centre as soon as you have purchased MTA Protects.

Firewall Configuration for MTA Protects

How do I configure non-MTA Protects firewall software to work with MTA Protects?
In general, you have to allow first the MTA Protects installation program, then the MTA Protects Client program, through your firewall.

Most firewalls provide alerts to your desktop when they detect that a program is trying to access the internet. This will happen first when the MTA Protects installation program tries to access the internet to verify the license details you have provided. When this happens, you should allow the access.

You will get another alert after installation when the MTA Protects Client program tries to send data back to the MTA Protects servers via the internet. When this happens, you should allow the access. Remember that MTA Protects provides constant monitoring of your computer(s) using your broadband connection, so you must allow the application to access the internet in order for it to carry out its job. You should specify that the MTA Protects Client should always be permitted access to the internet, in whatever manner this is done with your particular firewall software.

If your firewall software doesn't support the kind of alerts described above, you should be able to open the firewall's administrative tool and make the settings manually. Please refer to your firewall's documentation for instructions on how to do this.
